A unique "personal cloud" platform where each user got their own isolated environment to install and run apps. Combined the simplicity of Heroku with the philosophy of self-hosted software. Completely free, backed by EU funding.

Deta Space is a personal cloud platform that enables developers to build applications for themselves and distribute them to millions of users through a unique app-store-like experience. It provides managed infrastructure including databases, cloud storage, domains, cron scheduling, and API key management, all without requiring developers to configure or maintain servers. Deta Space reimagines the concept of personal computing by giving each user their own cloud environment where applications run in isolation.

The platform supports full-stack web applications built with popular frameworks like React, Next.js, Svelte, Nuxt, and backend languages including Python, Node.js, and Go. Deta offers its own simple SDK, Deta Base for NoSQL database operations, and Deta Drive for file storage. A distinctive feature is Teletype, an AI-powered assistant that allows users to spin up applications by describing them in natural language. The developer experience emphasizes simplicity with minimal configuration requirements.

Deta Space appeals to indie developers, hobbyists, and builders who want to create and distribute personal-scale applications without dealing with cloud infrastructure complexity. It is particularly well-suited for productivity tools, personal dashboards, lightweight APIs, and experimental projects. The platform plans to introduce monetization features so developers can sell their applications through the Deta Space ecosystem, creating a curated marketplace for personal cloud applications.

Why it died

Shut down on June 1, 2024. Despite a passionate community and innovative "personal cloud" concept, Deta couldn't find a sustainable business model with everything being free. The team pivoted to building enterprise developer tools. Users had 30 days to export their data. A reminder that "free forever" platforms rarely are — especially when the business model never materializes.
