This category contracted. Of the 18 browser-based development environments we track, 5 are discontinued — Deta Space (June 2024), AWS Cloud9 (July 2024), Codeanywhere (September 2024), StackBlitz Codeflow (October 2024) and JetBrains Fleet (December 2025). That is 28% of everything ever catalogued here, and it is the first thing a reader should know before committing a team's daily workflow to one. The 13 tools the page now shows are the survivors.
The survivors split by what the environment is actually for. If the goal is a real machine you happen to reach through a browser, GitHub Codespaces (85/100, GitHub Codespaces) is the default for teams already on GitHub, free to 120 core-hours a month, and our review's caveat is worth repeating: standardise dev containers and set spending controls before rolling it out, or the bill becomes the story. Coder is the self-hosted equivalent — open source, run on your own infrastructure — and is the answer when code cannot leave your network.
If the goal is speed from repository to running app, the browser-native environments win outright. StackBlitz (85/100) runs Node.js in the browser itself with no VM to provision, which is why it is fastest for JavaScript and TypeScript and unsuitable for heavier polyglot or infrastructure work. CodeSandbox (84/100, Pro $9/mo) has moved toward programmable sandbox infrastructure with an SDK, and our review is explicit that teams should evaluate it on that basis rather than on its older playground reputation.
If the goal is a shared notebook, Google Colab (77/100) remains the easiest way to run and share hosted Jupyter with a GPU, and remains — by our review's reading — a learning and experimentation service rather than guaranteed production compute. Jupyter and Marimo are both here, both open source, both unscored so far.
One repositioning to read carefully before buying: Gitpod scores 82/100, but our review states that Gitpod Classic has been retired and the current product, Ona, is an agent-first engineering platform rather than a conventional cloud IDE. Evaluate the product that exists now, not the one the score's reputation was built on.
