OpenMeter

Real-time usage metering and billing for AI, API, and DevOps products

open-sourceopen sourcetelemetry concernsupdated Jul 14, 2026

OpenMeter is an Apache-2.0 open-source metering platform that ingests usage events, aggregates them into meters, and supports limits, entitlements, and usage-based billing. It fits AI, API, and DevOps products that need token-level reporting, customer usage visibility, or finance-ready chargeback data. Teams can self-host the core platform or evaluate OpenMeter's managed offering.

OpenMeter is an Apache-2.0 usage metering and billing platform for AI, API, and DevOps products. It collects product-usage events, aggregates them through configurable meters, and exposes the resulting usage for customer dashboards, limits, entitlements, and billing workflows. Teams can run the open-source project in their own infrastructure or evaluate OpenMeter's managed service.

For AI workloads, OpenMeter can provide a finance-facing layer above raw token or request events. Product teams can measure consumption by customer or feature, platform teams can enforce usage limits, and finance teams can use the same metered data for showback, chargeback, or usage-based pricing. This is useful when model observability already exists but the business still needs a consistent record of billable activity.

Choose OpenMeter when event ingestion, aggregation, and usage controls are more important than an all-in-one subscription-management suite. Before production rollout, validate event delivery, meter definitions, late or duplicate events, tenant isolation, data retention, billing-system integration, and operational ownership. OpenMeter can complement tracing and FinOps dashboards, but it should be evaluated as revenue and entitlement infrastructure rather than as a replacement for model-quality observability.

Pricing

Apache-2.0 open-source self-hosting is available. OpenMeter also offers a managed cloud service; check the vendor's current pricing and enterprise terms.
