Parallel worktrees and session shape
Emdash treats parallel agents as first-class tasks on a visual board: each agent lands in an isolated Git worktree so concurrent edits do not trampoline into the same working tree. The product pitch centers on detecting many local CLI agents, wiring MCP servers, and keeping the board as the control surface while the underlying agents still own model quality and subscriptions.
Claude Squad takes the opposite shell: a terminal app (cs) that spins agents such as Claude Code, Codex, Gemini, or Aider into tmux sessions with their own worktrees or branches. The value is multiplexed terminals, a dashboard of live instances, auto-accept for background runs, and a review step before merge — not a desktop ADE canvas. If your muscle memory is already tmux and CLI agents, Squad stays closer to that loop.
Desktop ADE versus CLI multiplexer
Emdash aims at developers who want an agentic development environment rather than another bare terminal. Cross-platform desktop packaging (macOS, Windows, Linux) and a board-centric workflow make it easier to see what each agent is doing without juggling panes by hand. That broader surface is why the existing review frames it as a clearer OSS pick for multi-tool parallelization — with the caveat that it does not replace model subscriptions or enterprise governance.
Claude Squad stays deliberately thin: Homebrew install, CLI-first, macOS/Linux. There is no claim here of a polished Windows desktop ADE. The trade-off is intentional: less UI chrome, more direct control over sessions, diffs, and merge gates. Teams that refuse another Electron-style surface will often prefer that constraint even without a published Score v1.
Licensing and contribution posture
Both tools are open source and charge $0 for the orchestrator itself; users still pay LLM providers or bring local keys. Emdash uses the MIT license, which is permissive for forks, embedding, and commercial redistribution of the tooling layer. Claude Squad uses AGPL-3.0, which is more copyleft: network/distribution obligations can matter if you modify and ship the multiplexer as a service or redistribute binaries.
Neither license invents model privacy guarantees. Privacy and data handling still follow whichever agents and APIs you attach. The Emdash review’s privacy score (85, tested 2026-05-22) reflects that hands-on context for Emdash only; Claude Squad remains unscored here.
Evidence, scores, and what we are not claiming
Emdash already has a verified editorial review: overall 82, speed 88, privacy 85, developer experience 79, tested 2026-05-22. Those numbers may be cited as existing Score v1 evidence with dates. Claude Squad’s listing documents parallel agents, worktrees, tmux isolation, dashboard, auto-accept, and review-before-merge, but there is no verified Score v1 artifact for Squad on aicoolies yet.
This comparison therefore refuses two shortcuts: inventing a Squad score, and pretending the page is a fresh dual hands-on re-test. When a Squad review lands with rubric evidence, the winner framing should be revisited. Until then, Emdash is the only side with published Score v1 numbers.
Who should pick which — and the winner guide
Choose Emdash if you want a visual ADE board for many CLI agents, cross-platform desktop packaging, and an orchestrator that already carries a verified aicoolies review. Choose Claude Squad if you want a CLI-native cs / tmux multiplexer with worktree isolation and merge review, and you do not need a scored ADE shell today.
